Magnet Theme
According to PBL Works (pblwork.org), Project Based Learning is “a teaching method in
which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful
projects.” It is where “students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended
period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex
question, problem or challenge.”
We chose PBL for our magnet theme through research and voting by parents, students,
staff and community in early 2020. Our goal is to be the leader in Project Based Learning
for Wichita Public Schools and the surrounding area because no other school has PBL as
their primary focus. Given our own mission and vision, PBL has proven to uphold our core
beliefs while ultimately positively impacting student achievement. Students of all
abilities can be successful using PBL, the strategies as well as social skills (collaboration,
problem-solving, critical thinking, presentation skills, etc).
Although we are still learning ourselves, Black Traditional Magnet is beyond excited to see
what we can accomplish together!
